APPLICATION:

1G, 2G, 3G and 4G plate are applicable in the fabrication and installation of tanks, vessel, structural, shipbuilding and aeronotics

1G, 2G, 5G and 6G pipe are applicable in the fabrication and installation of piping and pipelines for industrila plants, oil and gas industry, chemical plants and other industry which uses piping and pipelines.

6GR is applicable mainly in the fabrication and installation of offshore structure and other structure that have the TKY configuration.

Heats School of Welding Technology Inc plans to introduce new courses in the late 2010 or early 2011 to cater other skills which are also in-demand job overseas.

Expressing keen interest on these new courses, the Heats President Engr. Pedro G. Jose Jr. conducted a visits on various Painting Contractors as well as attended various training in Painting Technology. His latest attendance in the Coating Inspector’s Course Level I and Coating Inspector’s Course Level 2 conducted by NACE International in Brunei Darussalam are one of the steps the Heats Executive is doing for the implementation of these courses. He is now a Certified Coating Inspector Level I and Level II and a member of NACE International (National Association of Corrosion Engineers), an added qualification aside from his qualification as Certified Sr. Welding Inspector (CSWIP 3.2 -UK)

The planned courses are Construction Painting NC II (including Blasting) and Practical Electricity NCII.

Blasters, Painters and electricians are one of the in-demand workers overseas aside from welders. With the demand overseas, Engr. Jose is very positive that many High School graduates will take these courses.

One of the welding process that are commonly used in the construction industry is the Submerged Arc Welding (or what they call it SAW). his process is fully automised. Sample pictures are shown below.

SAW requires a continuously fed consumable solid electrode. The molten weld and the arc zone are protected from atmospheric contamination by being “submerged” under a blanket of granular fusible flux. When molten, the flux becomes conductive, and provides a current path between the electrode and the work. This thick layer of flux completely covers the molten metal thus preventing spatter and sparks as well as suppressing the intense ultraviolet radiation and fumes.

Five (5) GTAW trainees took the trade test for GTAW 6G in accordance with ASME IX. The test was conducted last October 3, 2009 at Heats’ Training Center. The test started at 9:00 AM and was finished at 11:30AM.

The test pipe used was A53 Grade B 2 inches diameter schedule 40. It was tested at 6G position using GTAW process with TGS 50 filler wire and 99.9% Argon as shielding gas.

All of them passed the test visually and mechanically.

WQT was issued to each of them in accordance with ASME IX by the Third Party Inspection company Corrometrixweld Inspection Services.

TESDA Assessment will follow soon as the schedule is yet to be given by TESDA Tarlac.

Tarlac City, Philippines – More than 10 previous graduate of SMAW NC II in Heats School of Welding Technology, Inc were trade tested by TESDA Tarlac Assessor last saturday (Sept. 12, 2009).

After the practical test, the assessor was impressed on the result of the practical test. “They are all good” the TESDA Assessor said after the practical test. The written exam will be conducted tommorow (Sept. 14, 2009) at the TESDA Tarlac office.

The labor of the Heats Instructors were not in vain as all the students who took the practical test successfully passed. This is the main reason that Heats School of Welding Technology, Inc. is very proud to the world that HSWTI is one of the best welding training center in the Philippines because of the good training output. “Its really a quality training!’ one of the student said. “The accomodation is good, the instructor are friendly, knowledgeable and experienced”  he added.

Another area of welding job is offshore works.

One of the best paid welders works in offshore structures or offshore projects. The salary ranges from US$50-US$150 per day. The qualifications of Offhsore welders are either SMAW 6G plus  SMAW 6GR plus GTAW 6G as per ASME IX for piping works and as per AWS D1.1 for structural works. If the project is pipelaying, the qualifications shall be SMAW 5G as per API 1104.

Seven (7) out of the 18 TESDA scholars who graduated last June 2009 landed a job locally in various companies.

Most of them are now working in URC-Tarlac as Maintenence and the top of their class who passed SMAW NC II TESDA-Tarlac Assessment Mr. Ronald Joseph B. Gabuni works as Jr. Welding Instructor. One of them ventured his way to Bataan.

This is a good news for Heats as well as to TESDA Tarlac who sponsored their SMAW NC II course. It is also good for the graduates as astart of their career.

Another graduate of Heats on GTAW course flies to Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Jonthan Fernandez, while undergoing training in GTAW course in Heats, applied for job vacancies in various agencies. During his training, he was called up by one of the agencies for trade testing. He went for trade testing and passed. After passing the trade test, he was accepted as GTAW Welder.

What is bend testing and why do we do it?

A Welder test specimen is being tested through a guided bend test while a Certified Sr. Welding Inspector is witnessing

Bend testing is done either by side bend test, root bend or face bend test or combination thereof depending on the project or code requirements.

As per ASME IX, welder’s test piece shall be checked by 100% visual inspection plus bend test or in lieu of bend test, radiographic testing. However, many projects are requiring both the  bend test and radiographic testing. Bend test is done after acceptance of radiographic testing. If in case, the test piece passed the radiographic testing and failed the bend testing, the overall result will be FAILED.

One area of welding work is the fabrication of tanks and pressure vessels. Tanks can be a water storage tank, chemical

storage tank, gasoline tank, diesel tank ect. while pressure vessels are those used at high pressure.

Welders on this work are plate welders only but qualified under ASME IX.

Fabrication of tanks and pressure vessels is very interesting and challenging. The hardest thing on this job is when you are doing welding inside which is very very hot especially when its under the sun. Welders on this area are compensated very well like pipe welders.

The Sr. Welding Instructor of Heats School of Welding Technology, Inc. attended Technical Seminar in Plasma Cutting Process.

The seminar was conducted last July 22, 2009 and was titled PLASMA CUTTING PROCESS presented by Mr. Boeh Ringer and sponsored by ESAB Asia and Center Industrial Supply Corporation.

Continous education through seminars is very helpful to Heats teaching force. The lessons they learned from the seminars will be taught to their students. Heats Management is very active in sending their teaching force in technical seminars. They believe the idea that a fully trained personnel will be more productive in his area of responsiblity.

The Heats Sr. Welding Instructor also attended Welding Inspector’s Course last May 25-29, 2009 conducted in Heats Training room.

One of the graduates of Welding Inspector’s Course which was conducted last May 25-29, 2009 landed a job in Bataan.

Alvin Santiago now works in an LPG refilling station (Liquigaz Phils. Inc) in Mariveles Bataan. LPG refilling station is a good start for a WI graduate. Fabrication, installation and maintenance including Non destructive testing and Welding Inspection of LPG Mother Tanks & Piping are some of the knowledge that you can learn in a refilling station.

The code and specification used in LPG refilling stations is the ASME VIII Div. 1 and the project specification by the Gas Supplier which in most cases in the Philippines is the Shell Philippines.

According to the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), compared to other skilled workers, Filipino welders are more in-demand here in the Philippines and abroad. 

For the thousands of OFW flying abroad yearly, a big percentage of them are welders. Normally TIG welders are the most in-demand, next is the SMAW Pipe Welder and then SMAW Plate Welders. 

TIG Welders and SMAW Pipe Welders are commonly hired in the construction of refineries, pipelines, gas plants, chemical plants, LNG Plants, Petrochemical Plant, Offshore pipelines, Offshore Topside, fabrication shops and many others. Plate welders are commonly hired in the construction of buildings, vessels, tanks, structural and shipyard.

The lowest level of welding is the SMAW Plate Welder. Plate welder can upgrade his qualification by attending training in SMAW Pipe course (SMAW NCII) or by experience in the construction industry on piping works. SMAW Pipe Welders can upgrade his qualification into a TIG Welder by attending GTAW NCII course. Most often, due to the high cost of argon, companies does not allow their welder to train in GTAW while they are employed with them, but some companies are allowing their SMAW Welders to learn GTAW. The other way of upgrading is by attending a GTAW NCII Course.

The three level of welding stated above (SMAW NCI, SMAW NCII & GTAW NCII) are offered by HEATS SCHOOL OF WELDING TECHNOLOGY, INC. Heats can make a zero knowledgeable person in a high skilled Plate Welder in 6 weeks, can make a Plate welder into a high skilled Pipe welder in 6 weeks and can make a Pipe Welder into a highly skilled TIG Welder in 6 weeks.

We recommend that graduates of SMAW NCI, SMAW NCII or GTAW NCII should work locally for at least one to two years before working overseas so that they will be more mature in welding profession. 

Welders are highly in demand in countries like North America, Europe, Middle East, as well as in some developing countries in Asia.

Heat Input is very important in Welding Procedure. The recommended Heat Input value by the steel manufacturers should be strictly followed during qaulification of Welding Procedure.

The formula for Heat Input is:

Heat Input (Joules/inch) = (Volts x Amps x 60) / Travel Speed (inch/min)

In accordance to the definition of AWS D1.1, peening is the mechanical working of metals using impact blows.

As per section 5.27 of AWS D1.1, peening may be used on intermediate layers for control of shrinkage stresses in thick welds to prevent cracking or distortion or both. No peening shall be done on the root or surface layer of the weld or base metal at the edges of the weld except as provided in section 2.20.6.6(3). Care should be taken to prevent overlapping or cracking of the weld or base metal.

The use of manual slag hammers, chisels, and lightweight vibrating tools for the removal of slag and spatter is allowed and shall not be considered peening.

6GR Welding Position is in accordance with AWS D1.1 Structual Welding Code – Steel (An American National

Standard). This is often called restriction welding, which the “R” in the term 6GR is with restriction ring, while 6G in the term 6GR is the same as in 6G position. The difference with the 6G and 6GR position is the restriction ring and the the bevel preparation. 6G is prepared as single vee at 45 degrees postion with the horizontal plane, while the 6GR bevel preparation is single bevel and the two connecting pipe has different thicknesses, one is thicker of at least 4-6mm. The thicker pipe is the one with no bevel preparation, and the thinner pipe is prepared in single bevel. An example of 6GR postion is shown in the picture on the right of this article. This is the hardest welding test position in Shielded Metal Arc Welding. This position is normally used in the welding of Offshore platform structure such as offshore jacket, beams, decks, boatlanding, underside and other parts of the offshore platform. This position qualifies you to weld TKY joints. This one of the most highly paid welding position aside from GTAW Welder. It si suggested that you have 6GR SMAW, 6G sMAW, 6G GTAW/SMAW (Combination) and 6G GTAW qualification in order for you to have the higher advantage of any welder in the industry. Additional 6G GTAW Stainless Steel and Duplex is an added advantage.

Welders are employed in a variety of industries. Some work in steel fabrication company, auto manufacturing, refrigeration, aviation industry, shipbuilding and Oil & gas industry.

The starting pay for welders in the Philippines is from P5,000/month up to P15,000/month. While experienced welders working overseas is from P30,000/month up to P250,000/month depending on the company and location they are working.

Filipino welders obtain training at technical colleges, trade schools, and some starts initially as helpers in fabrication companies.

Mr. Jose is now trying to find a ways to contact ECF Administration to launch the same program in HSWTI. This program will be a big help to Tarlaquenos especially our less fortunate kababayans.

Loreto Soriano, recruitment analyst, stressed that the Philippines can take advantage of the pressing need for skilled workers in trillion-dollar projects in the Middle East if many of the high school graduates will shift to schools offering tech-voc subjects like auto servicing, technical drawing/drafting, building wire installation, shielded metal arc welding, machining, pipefitting, metal craft and carpentry. “The country is not meeting global orders due to the worker’s lack of skills. Recruitment companies are competing with each other for the very few skilled workers for their job orders mainly from the Middle East,” he said. Soriano, president of LBS-E-Recruitment, said Saudi Arabia is embarking on the a massive construction effort to build four super cities while the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman have been on a construction binge since 2005 with the sudden rise of oil prices fattening the dollar reserves of the all oil producing countries in the region. He cited data on the infrastructure boom around the world where employers are looking for highly qualified construction workers such as welders, flame cutters, pipe fitters, and carpenters. The recruitment industry leader also noted that Canada also needs hundreds of thousands of workers in the oil fields of Calgary, Alberta and construction workers in British Columbia for the coming Winter Olympics. Soriano stressed that the a massive training program should be implemented by the Arroyo administration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Education (DepEd) intensifying efforts with technical vocational schools in the country. He added training centers for welding, electrical installations, carpentry, machining and pipe fitting experts should be put up with retired construction workers working as trainers to transfer their experience and know-how to vocational students. Meanwhile, the DepEd has created a Technical Vocation Education Task Force to cope with the demand for skilled workers abroad. Dr. Ricardo de Lumen, officer in charge of the Technical Vocational Education Task Force, said human resource trainings are needed to strengthen the technical-vocational program in the country. “Our technical-vocational school heads must be trained for the pilot implementation of the Competency-based Curriculum (CBC) in their secondary schools,” he said. The CBC includes the following 18 priority subject areas: animal production, agricultural crop production, horticulture, fish capture, aqua culture, food processing, auto servicing, carpentry, technical drawing/drafting, building wiring installation, consumer electrical servicing, shielded metal arc welding, furniture and cabinet making, auto servicing, and machining which include metal craft and welding.(PNA)

Four of our graduates last May 7, 2009 succesfully land their OJT in BF Metal in Rizal Province. BF Metal is one of the big Fabrication Companies in the Philippines catering local and international clients.

Their OJT will last for one month and they started  last week (June 3, 2009). During their OJT, they will be taught in actual welding production including safety aspect of the work. They will encounter light to heavy fabrication works such as trusses, beams, columns and other related structural fabrication works.

The succesfull trainees who successfully land their OJT in BF Metal are; Erwin, Joven, Ronaldo and Jessie. Erwin and Joven are residents of Pasig City while Ronaldo and Jessie are residents of Tarlac City.

Their classmates who were not with them are in other places. Jake from Batangas City land a job in Keppel Yard as a Welder and James is continuing his training in our training facitlity for SMAW NC II and GTAW NC II. James’ father planned to take hin in Brunei once he finished and passed his GTAW NCII. Brunei is one of the places that needs welders especially TIG Welders. The main product of Brunei is Oil and Gas and its a rich country.

Four participants attended the Welding Inspector’s Course at Heats School of Welding Technology, Inc. Training Room 1, Carangian, Tarlac City. The course was conducted from May 25-29, 2009 from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. The course ended with END-OF COURSE ASSESSMENT.

The participants came from as far as Laguna, Taguig, Pampanga and Tarlac. Most of the participants are experienced in Construction Industry as Engineers and Supervisors.

19 TESDA scholars graduated for their SMAW NCII (PIPE WELDING) Course last May 30, 2009.

They will be trade tested by TESDA Tarlac for both theory and practical in the first week of June 2009.

During their last week of rigid training, the scholars produced an excellent weld. This result will ensure them in passing their TESDA Trade Test.

To all TESDA scholars who graduated yesterday, congratulations!!!

In my more than 10 years as an OFW, I have seen the demand of welders in every country that work with. I started my overseas work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We have more than 100 welders in our company who weld pipelines and refinery piping. The company next to our barracks have more than 200 welders. Back in the Philippines, when I was just a Cadet Engineer, I supervised more than 100 welders in a Steel Fabrication shop which specializes in Structural Steel, Communication Tower and other structure. I have noticed that in every construction company (especially those who do Oil and Gas Projects), they have at least 100 welders with different qualifications. Their qualification range from plate welder to pipe welder to tig welder to FCAW welder to GMAW welder or to SAW Operator. Ohh gosh, napakarami nila. I am just wondering where these welders came from?The Philippines, being a small country, have the vast manpower for welders and for your information, Pinoy Welders are the best welders in the world!

So the trend now, a lot of High School graduates tend to enroll in a short course in welding. In just few weeks, they have the technical capability of being a Certified Welder. Yes, it is a right thing to do! We do not need diplomas in the wall for a technical work overseas. We need the practical capabilities!!!

The March 24-May 27, 2009 Trainees graduated last May 12, 2009.

The passing percentage is 100% for both theory and practical assessment. They are now readying for an OJT in Metro Manila area. They will have one month OJT for them to familiarize the actual working environment.

During their OJT, and the company found them to be of good traits and good, the company might take them as their regular employee.

A trainee in 4G Welding Position

Overhead Welding Position (4G) is one of the hardest position in plate welding. Overhead position is used on fixed structure wherein you don’t have any choice as a welder bu to weld it overhead. Some contractors, espcially those who have a neophyte welders tend to postion their structrure either in vertical or horizontal postion for easiness and to avoid the difficult overhead postion.

Once you are qualified to 4G, you can easiy qualify in 3G and 2G. If you are qualified in 2G, 3G and 4G, then you can weld structural in all position (groove or fillet).

You can also learn the pipe welding easily if you know how to weld in overhead postion since pipe welding includes overhead, vertical and horizontal position.

Yes! Believe it or not,  just recently, an Australian registered in Heats to undergo SMAW Pipe and GTAW Pipe Training.

TESDA SCHOLARS (Standing)

A more than 20 TESDA Scholars started today in their 268 hours training for SMAW NC II. These scholars came from the 3rd District of Tarlac ( Bamban, Capas, Concepcion and Lapaz).

Headhunting of scholars started in late March 2009, and was completed in the middle of April. Profiling of scholars was conducted by TESDA last April 17 and April 20, 2009.

This scholarship grants is in cooperation between TESDA and Heats School of Welding Technology, Inc. The tuition fee of the scholars will be handled 100% by TESDA including P50/day allowance to each scholars. Its main goal is to help Tarlaquenos by providing a QUALITY TRAINING IN WELDING which they can use in their future jobs as welders.

Kudos to TESDA TARLAC for initiating this scholarship grant to Tarlaquenos and we do hope that this will not be the first and last but the start of cooperation between TESDA TARLAC and HEATS School of Welding Technology, Inc.

The bend test assists in determining the soundness of the weld metal, the weld junction and the heat affected zone. The test shows the quality of the welded joint. Any cracking of the metal will indicate false fusion or defective penetration.
The stretching of the metal determines to some extent its ductility. Fractured surface shows the crystalline structure. Large crystals usually indicate wrong welding procedure or poor heat treatment after welding. A good weld has small crystals.
The bend test is an easy and useful method of comparing one welded joint with another of the same type and of revealing abnormalities and defects at or near the surface in tension.

Bend tests may be used to find a number of weld properties such as
(i) Ductility of the welded zone
(ii) Weld penetration
(iii) Fusion
(iv) Crystalline structure (of the fractured surface)
(v) Strength.
